Valine’s Famous Cocktail Sauce

When we first met Valarie Davis Lee earlier this year, we were smitten. You’ll see why when you watch her share her “Famous” cocktail sauce with the fine folks at “Making It Grow”.

Valine’s Famous

Valarie Davis Lee may not recall the day she blended her first batch of cocktail sauce but she does remember the moment she heard the voice of George Jones crooning “if I could bottle this up…” It was kismet – family gathered in the kitchen, Valine (as her family calls her) grating fresh horseradish and cutting limes for the sauce, tunes of inspiration playing just as her brother-in-law leaned in to say “Val, you need to sell this stuff.” For Valine, her cocktail sauce may be famous only in her family for now, but that’s a darn good place to start.
A native of Sylvania, Georgia, Valine isn’t shy about her pride for the small town set on the Savannah River. Days spent beside her father at the family’s business, Davis Feed & Seed, she learned to appreciate the hard work in owning a small business and the support that comes from a tightknit community. Dusty dirt roads, lazy river floats, and mud pies are the memories of her youth in Sylvania but she saw far beyond the banks of the Savannah River. Alongside her mother, Valine’s passport became a patchwork of color and language – a cultural education that each time brought Valine home energized and inspired but more in love with her small town.

Slather It On!

If you have ever tasted Slather Brand Slathering Sauce you know how delicious it tastes on just about anything.  But here is a way we would have never thought of.

Slathered Chipotle-Spiked Chocolate Truffles

We think this recipe developed by cookbook author and Chef Holly Herrick using Spicy Slatherin’ Sauce combines the perfect zing to this classic bite of luxury.

Chef Holly says, “Dark chocolate takes on shades of ancient Aztec cooking with a splash of Slather Brand Foods Spicy Slatherin’ Sauce and a dash of chipotle chile powder. At first sweet with a mildly hot finish, these easy chocolates are perfect for romantic celebrations. And, they can be prepared days in advance, if need be.”

Penny’s Naturals

Penny’s Naturals is the brainchild and love of Tommy Copeland and Penny Calcina.

It began with a request. Penny had been using only pure, natural soaps for many years. Sensitive to the smell and feel of artificial colors and fragrance, she asked Tommy to convert to a pure laundry detergent that would not leave those smells and residue on clothing. Tommy’s alchemist brain went to work crafting homemade, silky, powdered laundry detergent that was not only pure, it was cleansing, conditioning and effective.

It was a hit and as they say, well, here they are! They had no idea in those early months of creating detergent for our own use, that we would evolve to where we are today. No idea.

Mother Shucker’s Original Cocktail Sauce

Ten years ago there was a moment in time that every mother remembers. The son, University of South Carolina business graduate and in a white collar job, turned to his mother and declared that he wanted to open an Oyster Bar. Just like that. No experience, not a day of working in a restaurant (except a little bartending in College).

The son traveled to his hometown in North Carolina to consult with the owners of the Sunnyside Oyster Bar. The son and the mother had grown up in the little town, famous for this eating establishment that has been there now for 75 years. The concept of the Sunnyside was the goal; patrons gathered around a bar, the shuckers shucking raw and steamed oysters and that was that. Lots of fun. No frills.
